Throughout this campaign, I was continuously reminded that progress doesn’t happen overnight. The fight for representation and meaningful change is part of a lifelong commitment: it is part of an ongoing struggle between us, the people and unrelenting forces determined to keep consolidated power and control.

I’ve been organizing for social movements and fighting for equality since I was 14, first marching in the streets during the 2006 mass mobilization for immigrant rights. During that time, I learned that the fight for civil rights and equality is a marathon, not a sprint.

📣 June 2026: Indiana Democratic Party State Convention (Convention), June 6, 2026.

• During this time, State Delegates (those chosen to represent their voting precinct) will gather at the Convention to:

  • Nominate democratic statewide candidates: Auditor of State, Secretary of State, and Treasurer of State during the mid-term election cycle;

  • Serve on Convention Committees (Credentials, Resolution, and Rules); and

  • Vote on the Indiana Democratic Party’s Platform.

Offices like the Secretary of State do not go through the primary elections to get the democratic nomination. Instead they secure the nomination through a majority of delegate votes during the convention. Winners then work towards the November general elections.

📣 July 2026: Anti-Immigration Senate Bill 76.

• Senate Bill 76 “Immigration matters” was signed into law by Governor Mike Braun, and was set to go into effect on July 1, but is currently in limbo:

• An ongoing federal lawsuit, filed by Monroe County Sheriff Ruben Marté (❣️) is challenging part of a new state law requiring local law enforcement agencies to comply with immigration detainer requests from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. See: Indiana Sheriff Sues Over Law Requiring Immigrant Detention.

• We’ll continue to follow the legal proceedings, and share information as it becomes available.

Mind you, 2024 was one of the most consequential presidential elections in modern history.

I am on a mission to reverse our historic low voter turnout, improve access to local government services, resources, and the ballot box.

In addition to citing systemic barriers (often created by local leadership), voters also stay home during midterms because of a lack of choices in competitive candidates on the ballot (we see the same people taking turns within local offices).

That’s why I decided to enter this race for Marion County Clerk! 🏃🏻‍♀️

I want to rebuild trust in local government through increased transparency and accountability, starting with the people that got us here, including my opponent in this primary election incumbent Kate Sweeney Bell, the current Marion County Clerk.

If re-elected, Kate claims she will “continue to work to increase voter turnout…”

However, Low Voter Turnout “baffles” Kate Sweeney Bell:

In 2024, when asked why voter engagement was so low under her leadership, Kate said she was “baffled.”

“I’m baffled when people have such power and choose not the exercise it,” Sweeney Bell said… She said she is disappointed and not sure why people chose to stay home, rather than go vote.

“If I knew why, I could do something about it,” Sweeney Bell said.

🙋🏻‍♀️ I Know Why Engagement is Low:

Beyond reading report after report after report (2025 Indiana Civic Health Index), I’ve seen firsthand how the system, including people like Kate Sweeney Bell push competent, energized and new voices out.

Dozens of New Voices Rejected & Blocked from the Ballot

This year, Marion County saw an unprecedented number of talented and qualified people excited to participate with the Indiana Democratic Party and the Marion County Democratic Party.

Dozens of new, enthusiastic and young people filed to run for Democratic Party Positions including precinct chairs (i.e. neighborhood captains). These roles serve as a bridge between voters and the Democratic Party, an agency that is supposed to facilitate entry into democracy.

Instead of welcoming these voices, the party shut them out, blocked them from participating and denied many of them access to the ballot. See Mirror Indy: ‘Rules are rules’: Indy Democratic leader rejects candidates.

❓The decision makers during 2026 challenges?

• Marion County Democratic Party Chair: Myla Eldridge and

• Marion County Democratic County Clerk: Kate Sweeney Bell.

Party Insiders Have a History of Challenging Newcomers

But does it even matter who holds what title and when? It seems like it doesn’t. Peel back the layers and you’ll see the same people (in different roles) making these decisions year after year.

Senate Bill 76 “Immigration matters” was signed into law by Governor Mike Braun on Thursday, March 5, 2026, putting Indiana at the forefront of immigration enforcement.

SB76 is one of the harshest and most draconian pieces of legislation Indiana has seen in recent history. This bill, at its core, mandates immigration enforcement, forcing local and state agencies to take on the role of federal immigration agents, whether they want to or not. And mass profit is at the center of it.

With the nation’s largest law enforcement budget, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is quickly directing funding to states like Indiana.

As ICE considers expanding this detention model in Indiana, now is the time to keep organizing.

Join immigrant-rights organizations as we discuss the implications and anticipated enforcement of anti-immigration SB 76, and connect with organizations working with impacted communities.

During the first part of the meeting, we will discuss SB 76, and hear from organizers with the Indiana Latino Democratic Caucus (INLDC), Hoosier Asian American Power (HAAP), Fuerza Unida (Fort Wayne), Cosecha Indiana and Love in Action Collective at Common Ground Midtown Church.

The second part of the town hall will provide space for immigrant-rights organizations, allies, and attendees to connect and share information, strategies, and resources. Participants will also learn how to get involved and hear about both immediate and long-term needs as organizations support immigrant communities across the state.

SB 76, Continued…

SB 76 also gives the Indiana Attorney General unprecedented enforcement power by expanding his role (in oversight and through penalties imposed). Portions of the bill are effective now (upon passage) while parts of the bill will go into effect on July 1.

Effective Now:

• Public institutions and universities cannot prevent federal immigration authorities from carrying out immigration laws in the state; the Attorney General is empowered to initiate legal action against any body that fails to follow these regulations, which may result in court-ordered injunctions and monetary penalties. (SECTION 5. IC 5-2-18.2-4, IC 5-2-18.2-5, and IC 5-2-18.2-6).

• *Miami Correctional Facility Reporting Requirements: this section of the bill requires detailed reporting from the “Intergovernmental Service 2025 Agreement Between ICE and Miami Correctional Facility” effective September 30, 2025 - September 29, 2027. (SECTION 11. IC 11-8-11)

State Immunity, Penalties, Costs & Reporting

The bill’s Fiscal Impact Statement provides an overview of the legislation, outlines the financial implications for government funds and budgets, and identifies the local and state agencies affected.

Built-in Profit = ICE Contracts

*In September 2025, the Indiana Budget Panel approved $15.79 million , requested by the Department of Corrections (DOC) to be used for detention upgrades at Miami Correctional Facility.

ICE detainees held in Miami Correctional Facility guarantee a profit, and as State Representative DeLaney noted, this is not an economic development project, but rather a project to lock people up and expel them for the country.

“Under the agreement, ICE will pay Indiana a per diem rate of $291.94 for each detainee per day — far higher than the $42 per day Indiana pays county sheriffs to house state inmates, and nearly four times the $75 per day cost for current inmates at the Miami Correctional Facility.”

Industrial Warehousing & Large-Scale Detention

With mass profit to be made and Indiana at the forefront of immigration enforcement, bills like SB 76 lay the foundation and structure for Trump’s mass deportation agenda, complementing ICE’s massive expansion of detention centers.

Through the purchase of vacant industrial warehouses aka “large-scale detention centers,” ICE will concentrate operations, with the goal to streamline the mass removal of people from the country.

With ICE considering an expansion of this detention model in Indiana, now is the time to keep organizing. See the action items below.

Nearly $40 billion has been earmarked for expansion, including the purchase of eight large-scale detention centers (in addition to existing processing facilities) set to be fully operational by November 30, 2026.

Moving at an unprecedented speed, hundreds if not thousands of people will be picked up, detained, processed and removed with little to no judicial or administrative oversight.

IndyStar: Indianapolis considered for 8,500-bed ICE detention facility

Mandatory Holds = Detention to Deportation Pipeline

SB 76 turns ICE detainers into mandatory holds, requiring agencies to comply with federal detainer requests, regardless of whether the jail has the staff to process these requests or capacity to hold detainees.

Previously, immigration authorities would ask local agencies to hold “potentially dangerous” individuals on ICE detainers for up to 48 hours. Now, anyone local officials determine to be in the country without authorization during booking, are subject to these detainers.

As reported by the Prison Policy Initiative: “traffic stops remain the most common reason for police-initiated contact across all demographics.”

The scenario here explains how this model would play out throughout Indiana.

If you are a U.S. Citizen and are otherwise eligible, voting is one of the ways you can stand up and fight back, particularly in local and county elections where people are elected into office by a few hundred votes, sometimes even dozens of votes. This is particularly important if you live in a smaller / rural county.

Often, local positions like the County Sheriff have the most discretion in how these laws are enforced. Other examples include:

• Council Members / City Mayors:

  • City Councils can adopt resolutions in opposition to ICE facilities, like the Merrillville Town Council in Indiana did, January 2026.

  • City Councils approve budgets, which at times include funding for the immigrant community, like the Immigrant Legal Services Fund in Marion County, Indiana.

  • County Councils can refuse to grant ICE facilities local permits, licensing or other approvals, like Kansas, City in Missouri did, January 2026.

• City Commissioners:

  • County commissioners can oppose ICE expansions and plans to convert warehouses into ICE detention facilities, like Orange County, Florida did, March 2026.

I’ve dedicated my entire adult life to standing up against harmful policies. From organizing against the cruel treatment of immigrants in the United States, to supporting friends and neighbors access the ballot, and protecting our right to vote.

The government’s unrelenting attacks at both the local and national level are coordinated, measured and precise which is why our response must be too.

❌ Access to the Ballot and Voter Suppression

Last week, The Marion County Democratic Party (County Party), chaired by Myla Eldridge, Filed 100+ Challenges against would-be candidates (running for precinct committee chairs, aka neighborhood captains and Indiana State Convention Delegates) with the Marion County Election Board (Election Board).

The election board scheduled a public meeting in a way that gave people roughly three business days to prepare a response. This approach is not only disappointing, it is also undemocratic.

⬇ This is why we keep ranking at the bottom for voter engagement and voter turnout — and also one of the reasons why I’m running for Marion County Clerk🙋🏻‍♀️

Marion County consistently ranks at the BOTTOM for voter engagement and voter turnout, consistently under the leadership of people like Kate Sweeney Bell, who previously served as County Chair and currently serves as County Clerk (responsible for overseeing county-wide elections, and who is also part of the three-person board adjudicating candidate challenges during the next Election Board meeting).

We are seeing an unprecedented surge of energy and engagement in local government. Instead of welcoming people, the old guard is once again choosing to create barriers, reinforcing an atmosphere of exclusion and confusion, alienating new voices and ideas from the Democratic process.

🚨 Stop the attack on early voting: House Bill 1359

On Monday February 16, Indiana lawmakers quietly added an amendment into House Bill 1359 “Scanning Ballots.”

• If passed with the amended language, this bill would reduce the number of early voting days from 28 days to 16 days.

Echoing Sen. Qaddoura’s concerns, this bill would limit access to the ballot, reduce voter participation, and further tank voter turnout not just in Marion County, but the state of Indiana.

“At a time when early voting sites are seeing long lines and record turnout, reducing access is a step in the wrong direction. We should be expanding access to the ballot box, not restricting it.”

WFYI: Lawmakers quietly advance plan to reduce early voting days

House Bill 1359 now heads to the full State Senate, where Indiana State Senators will hear and vote on the bill.

Indiana has consistently ranked among the lowest states when it comes to voter turnout, and reducing the number of days that Hoosiers have to vote early could make that even worse.

I’m also concerned about the fact that the amendment was added without any testimony from the public. When lawmakers are considering these important decisions, Hoosiers should have an opportunity to make their voices heard.

Registering to vote and participating in the upcoming elections is one of the easiest ways to assert the full measure of your citizenship and your constitutional rights. Check out this video which highlights Indiana voting qualifications!

Don’t know if you’re registered or not? Check your status by going to indianavoters.in.gov. In Indiana, you are eligible to vote if you:

• ✅ Are a U.S. Citizen,

• ✅ Are a Resident of Indiana,

• ✅ Are at Least 18 Years Old, on or Before the Next General Election,

• ✅ You Are Not Currently in Prison After Having Been Convicted of a Crime, and

• ✅ You Will Have Lived in the Precinct Where You Vote at Least 30 Days Before The Election.

Turning things around starts from the ground up

Last week, The Marion County Democratic Party (County Party), chaired by Myla Eldridge, Filed 100+ Would-be Candidate Challenges with the Marion County Election Board.

💡 If you’re also confused about the candidacy challenges, this is for you: this post is intended to shed light on agencies involved in these decisions and share relevant information, so affected individuals (would-be candidates) are equipped with more knowledge as they proceed with challenges to their candidacy.

Who Filed the Challenges?

The Marion County Democratic Party (County Party), chaired by Myla Eldridge, is challenging more than 100 would-be candidates who filed to run for Precinct Committee Person (PCP) and State Delegate and/or Indiana State Delegate. If the County Party is successful, these would-be candidates would not appear on the Democratic ballot for the May 5, 2026 Primary election.

Where Were the Challenges Filed?

The County Party submitted these challenges to the Marion County Election Board (Election Board). Would-be candidates received an email from Brent Stinson, Deputy Director of the Election Board on Friday, February 13, at 5:44 p.m.

⚠️ Note: the Election Board email address included in Friday’s email is incorrect. The correct email is Elections@indy.gov. ✔️

Would-be candidates have roughly three business days to try address/resolve the challenges before the Public Meeting where these challenges will be addressed.

❓Why Were the Challenges Filed?

No one actually knows: as of Monday February 16, would-be candidates have not received a copy of the “Candidate Filing Challenge,” CAN-1, which details the basis of the challenge, leaving would-be candidates in the dark about the grounds for the challenge.

Email exchanges between the County Party and would-be candidates gives some insight into the basis of the challenge, though. In response to an email from would-be candidate, County Party leadership said:

“As you have been notified, a challenge was filed regarding your candidacy. This challenge was likely based on the party rule [Indiana Democratic Party Rule 8] requiring that an individual’s most recent primary vote be a Democratic ballot.

We understand that many individuals who did not meet this requirement have sincere and understandable reasons, and we appreciate those of you who reached out to share your circumstances with us.”

How could would-be candidates move forward? Options include:

✅ Reach out to the County Party and Chair Myla Eldridge and ask they rescind the challenge or alternatively, ask whether they’ll appoint you as a PC / State Delegate.

• Assuming the challenge is based on failing to meet Democratic Party Membership as outlined under Indiana Democratic Party Rule 8 (c)(1), ask the County Party to certify you as a Democrat under IDP Rule 8(c)(2).

• Alternatively, you could also ask to be appointed as a PC / State Delegate.

Sample Script:

Dear Marion County Democratic Party,

I hope this message finds you well. I was surprised to receive notice from the Marion County Election Board on Friday that my candidacy for Precinct Committeeperson and/or State Delegate (precinct **) is being contested. I understand I am one of 100 filings being challenged.

[Example of Reason #1 Here: I voted Republican in the last primary because ***. I can assure you that I am an active Democrat and have been involved with several local and national groups ***.]

[Example of Reason #2 Here: I just moved from X state and as such, I haven’t had the opportunity to vote in an Indiana Primary.]

I respectfully ask that you reconsider contesting my candidacy or, if that is not possible, please place me on the list of potential appointments as I am eager to stay involved with my local party.

✅ Ask the County Party to confirm Chair Myla Eldridge and Party leadership will be present at the hearing on Friday, February 20.

• Would-be candidates deserve a fair opportunity to address questions with the Chair and party leadership in regards to the challenge made against them.

• Because would-be candidate’s challenges re: eligibility are made by the County Chair and not the Election Board, would-be candidates will likely not have an opportunity to present their argument during the February 20 meeting.

• Despite this, would-be candidates should make an effort to show up, and ask the County Party questions re: their challenge.

Anti-Immigration Bill Senate Bill 76 “Immigration matters”

Senate Bill 76 “Immigration matters”passed out of the Senate, and is now scheduled for a hearing at the Indiana State House (200 W. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46204) in the House Judiciary Committee on Monday, February 2 at 10:30 a.m.

While there are some differences, SB76’s language mirrors much of what was included in House Bill 1531 “Various Immigration Matters.” That House Bill died during the 2025 legislative session.

WFYI: Lawmakers push wave of immigration bills aligned with Trump agenda

🚨This Bill is Dangerous Because:

• SB 76 increases the risk of wrongful detention and 4th Amendment violations: SB 76 requires mandatory compliance with ICE detainers, which increases the risk of unlawful detention, leading to costly litigation. This has happened in other states, and SB 76 sets up Indiana to experience the same problem.

• SB 76 increases Due Process and 14th Amendment violations: The mandatory nature of the bill limits the ability of local officials to exercise discretion or review the validity of a detainer, which may infringe upon an individual’s due process rights.

• SB 76 conflicts with federal law: Immigration is a federal responsibility, and states can’t create or mandate broad, independent immigration enforcement powers. But SB 76 forces local agencies and public colleges into compliance, to a degree that goes beyond what federal law allows.

• SB 76 increases surveillance of immigrant communities: SB 76 weaponizes public programs by requiring them to report and collect data on non-citizens, which could deter eligible people from seeking essential services.

🗣️Ways to Take Action:

1. Sign up to testify at the February 2 hearing, you can use this link to register, which typically opens the night before the hearing.

2. Show Up at the State House: If you’re able to attend, your presence matters. A strong turnout sends a clear message. Signs are welcome, but they must be foldable to pass through security.

3. Call or Email the Judiciary Committee Members:

📞 Sample Script: “Hi, my name is [name], and I’m a voter in [city]. I’m contacting you in opposition of SB 76, which targets our immigrant communities, undermines public trust, and threatens our civil liberties. You can reach me at [phone number].”

What to Expect If You Attend on Monday, February 2:

• SB76 is one of two bills being discussed, so exact timing is uncertain.

• Room 156-B is small, and overflow attendees may be redirected.

• Women4Change: How to Testify at the State House

• Parking is available at the nearby meters or in surrounding garages.

  • The easiest way to enter the State House is the lower level west entrance, accessible via the Robert D. Orr Plaza.

  • You will need to go through a metal detector to get into the building, so please plan time to wait in line in case there is a crowd.

  • Once you’ve made it through the metal detector, you are on the 1st Floor of the building -- the same floor as room 165-B.

…that in November 2024, Marion County had the second lowest voter turnout of Indiana counties, and the turnout was among the “lowest for a presidential election year since at least 1988?” (Mirror Indy: Despite early voters, Indy turnout rate among lowest since 1988.)

Making these spaces welcoming also means breaking down barriers keeping people out, and meeting people where where they’re at. This starts by establishing a consistent community presence year-round, and showing up for every township, rain or shine.

🙋🏻‍♀️ If elected, I pledges to engage in, and support 200 community-led events in 2027.

I have so many ideas I am excited to explore new ways to reach more people, and share local government services! Through this work, we can start to change the outcome of our circumstances and in that process, create new possibilities for ourselves.

Defend Democracy: Register to Vote

Registering to vote and participating in the upcoming elections is one of the easiest ways to assert the full measure of your citizenship and your constitutional rights. This is one of the easies ways to defend democracy.

Are you registered to vote? Check your status by going to indianavoters.in.gov. In Indiana, you are eligible to vote if you:

• ✅ Are a U.S. Citizen,

• ✅ Are a Resident of Indiana,

• ✅ Are at Least 18 Years Old, on or Before the Next General Election,

• ✅ You Are Not Currently in Prison After Having Been Convicted of a Crime, and

• ✅ You Will Have Lived in the Precinct Where You Vote at Least 30 Days Before The Election.

Turning things around starts from the ground up, through local and grassroots action. This is why we need people like you and me to get involved. Important dates:

• 🗓️ Monday, April 6, 2026: Deadline to Register to Vote in the Primary Election.

• 🗳️Tuesday, May 5, 2026: Primary Election Date.

Growing up as an immigrant, I couldn’t vote. After gaining my U.S. Citizenship at 18, I never imagined that one day I’d be running for the very office where I first registered to vote.

Today, I am honored to share that I am officially launching my campaign to become the Democratic nominee for the Marion County Clerk of the Court. 🏃🏻‍♀️📋

A Community Bridge

This moment is almost as meaningful as the day I voted for the first time. Invoking my right to vote is always full of emotions; I know many people in our communities lack access to the ballot and continue to face barriers that prevent them from exercising their right to vote.

Becoming a citizen and voting are privileges I don’t take for granted. For over 15 years now, I’ve been advocating for accessibility and helping people navigate these complex systems.

Continuing the Work Through This Office

In addition to serving as the official record keeper for the circuit court, the Clerk also oversees county-wide elections by serving as the Secretary to the Marion County Election Board.

I am on a mission to increase Marion County’s historic low voter turnout using every tool available. I am enthusiastic about public service, and I want to make sure that every resident—not just a small handful of people —can access local government services, resources, and the ballot box.

I am prepared to meet this moment with courage and honesty. Together, we can rebuild trust in local government through transparency and accountability. Through that work, we can start to change the outcome of our circumstances and in that process, create new possibilities for ourselves.

Change in Motion

Drawing on 15 years of experience as a grassroots organizer, community advocate, and public servant, I am ready to take on this role.

I currently work as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney and Director of Community Outreach with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office. In this role, I help Marion County residents navigate local government systems, provide education and resources. For the past 5 years, I have worked across all nine townships to make government more accessible to the people it serves.

My civic experience in also includes serving in volunteer-led organizations like the Indiana Latino Democratic Caucus (INLDC), where I served as President from 2024-2026. Prior to serving as the President, I served as the Voter Education Chair, from 2019-2024. I have also worked hard to support democratic efforts and served as the Indiana Democratic Party, Bilingual Field Organizer in the Fall of 2020.

Bi-Partisan Voting Rights Work

One of the efforts I am most proud of are the Civic and Legislative Health Educational Segments I was a part of with Telemundo Indy, in Partnership with the Indiana Latino Expo in 2024. The segments often featured civic leaders in the State, and focused on:

• How A Bill Becomes a Law and the Indiana General Assembly;

• Indiana Congressional Representatives and Constituency Services;

• How To Register to Vote, an Overview;

• Navigating Law School as a First Generation Student;

• How To Register to Vote, in Depth - and Important Election Information;

• The Role of Local Government Agencies;

• Local Elections and Bilingual Educational Resources; and

• Register to Vote: Step By Step

I’ve dedicated my adult life to expanding access to these spaces and have made it my mission to break down barriers that prevent people from fully engaging. I am excited to pursue this office as a vehicle to continue this work and hope you consider joining us!
